Our client, a prominent player in the intra-logistics sector, specialises in providing comprehensive logistics solutions including automated material handling systems.
They manage a widespread infrastructure of industrial PCs (IPCs) crucial for their operations.
CHALLENGE
The client’s existing patch management processes were manual, inconsistent, and unable to keep up with the rapid release of patches. This resulted in increased vulnerability to cyber threats and potential non-compliance with regulatory standards
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the project were to:
Ensure that all IPCs were protected against security vulnerabilities.
Minimise system downtime and maintain high operational reliability.
Achieve compliance with industry regulations and standards related to cybersecurity and data protection.
SOLUTION PROPOSED AND IMPLEMENTATION
The solution involved the implementation of Ubuntu Pro as the baseline operating system for its security, compliance features, and long-term support. Ubuntu Landscape was chosen as the system management tool to automate and centralize the patch management process.
IMPLEMENTATION DETAILS:
Baseline OS:
Ubuntu Pro was installed on all IPCs for enhanced security and compliance features.
Patch Management Tool:
Ubuntu Landscape was deployed to manage all IPCs centrally, automating the identification, testing, and deployment of patches.
Process Customization:
The patch management process was tailored to include compatibility checks with existing hardware and software, custom scheduling during low-activity periods, and robust security measures during patch transfers.
RESULTS AND IMPACT
Increased Security and Compliance:
The automated patch management system ensured that all IPCs were up-to-date with the latest security patches, significantly reducing the risk of cyber threats.
Improved Operational Efficiency:
Automating the patch process reduced manual labor and minimized the likelihood of errors, resulting in fewer system downtimes
Enhanced System Reliability:
With scheduled patch deployments and proactive monitoring, the system’s overall reliability improved, ensuring continuous production without interruptions.
LESSONS LEARNED AND CONCLUSION
This project highlighted the importance of a standardized approach to patch management. The integration of Ubuntu Pro and Landscape proved critical in achieving a scalable, secure, and compliant IT infrastructure. The client benefited from an efficient, automated system that supported their operational needs and compliance requirements.
