Centralized Energy Monitoring & Control: a map-based SCADA platform with zero backend config.
A scalable Ignition Perspective platform that manages hundreds of energy meters across dispersed sites from a single map — and lets operators create, move and diagnose hardware directly from the UI, with no manual Gateway configuration.
Purpose
This project is a centralized, scalable energy monitoring and control platform designed to manage hundreds of energy meters across diverse geographical sites through a single, map-based Perspective interface. It uniquely empowers users to configure, move and diagnose hardware devices directly from the application UI — bypassing the need for manual backend Gateway configuration.
The Problem
In large-scale energy infrastructure, monitoring dispersed assets often leads to “configuration fatigue.” Standard SCADA implementations require an administrator to manually log into the software backend to add each new meter, configure IP addresses and map tags. This creates a massive bottleneck as the network grows.
Visibility is often siloed, too: operators struggle to see the relationship between a physical location (a site) and the real-time health of individual meters. There was a clear need for a system that could not only monitor energy consumption but also manage the lifecycle of the hardware itself — in a genuinely user-friendly way.
The core challenges
- Bridging Client UI and the System Gateway — device configuration is normally a backend-only task
- Triggering secure, responsive gateway-level changes (add a device, change an IP) from a frontend dashboard
- Dynamic mapping — moving a device between sites had to update the map, diagnostics and comms paths instantly
- All of it without ever breaking tag references
● THE SOLUTION
A deeply integrated management ecosystem.
Built on the Inductive Automation Ignition platform, combining the Perspective Map, custom dashboards and the scripting engine.
Geospatial Navigation
Perspective Map markers make each site the entry point — an immediate visual status of the entire infrastructure at a glance.
Power Configuration Dashboard
A custom dashboard of tables and input fields replaces the Gateway web interface — the heart of the project.
Diagnostic Drill-Down
Each meter has a dedicated diagnostic view with live values, remote On/Off and a direct link to its web server.
Zero-Gateway-Config, by design
Instead of using the Ignition Gateway web interface, we built a custom dashboard where the UI does the backend’s job:
-
Automated scripting — using Ignition's
system.devicefunctions, users create devices, assign IP addresses and set port numbers on the fly - Live Gateway sync — disable a device or change its IP in the UI, and the change is pushed straight to the Gateway
- Verified in real time: the Gateway status moves from Disabled to Connecting the moment the UI changes
Every tool, one click away
Each meter opens into a dedicated diagnostic view built for technicians. Real-time three-phase monitoring — voltage, current, active and apparent power, power factor and frequency — sits alongside remote On/Off control and a direct URL link to the device’s internal web server via its IP address.
No jumping between the SCADA screen, a spreadsheet of IP addresses and a browser: everything a technician needs to diagnose a meter is in one place.
Real-time alarming across every meter
Site communication faults, high and low level conditions and critical thresholds surface immediately in a filterable alarm view — active and cleared, by priority — so operators act on the right events first.
● RESULTS & IMPACT
From an IT/OT task to an administrative workflow.
Before
Adding a new site or meter required an Ignition expert to log into the backend, create tags and manually configure device connections. Every change was a bottleneck. Moving a physical meter meant a software redesign.
After
A field technician or manager registers a new site or meter from a simple form on a PC or tablet. Deployment time dropped from minutes of manual configuration to seconds of data entry — and moving a meter is now a single table update that the map reflects automatically.
Multi-site visibility
Energy visibility across every site, all from one platform.
Scales with you
Centralized management that grows with your infrastructure.
Live diagnostics
Real-time diagnostics and remote control for every connected meter.
Zero-Gateway-Config
Add and edit hardware directly from the dashboard.
Our approach
This platform was conceptualized, designed and implemented as a specialized SCADA build, grounded in user-centric engineering — the principle that an operator shouldn’t need to be a programmer to manage their own hardware. By leveraging the full stack of Ignition’s scripting engine and the Perspective module, we bridged the gap between complex IT configuration and intuitive industrial control, producing a high-impact, enterprise-grade “digital twin” blueprint that scales.
